  • First Listening (No Notes): Listen to the audio clip without taking notes to grasp the general idea.
  • Second Listening (With Notes): Listen again, this time taking detailed notes.

  • Any conclusions or recommendations
  1. Review Your Notes:
  • Organize them logically.
  • Highlight keywords and phrases.

b. Note-taking Techniques (15 Minutes)

  • Learn Abbreviations and Symbols:
  • Common Abbreviations:
    • & = and
    • w/ = with
    • w/o = without
    • b/c = because
    • e.g. = for example
    • i.e. = that is
  • Symbols:
    • = increase/rise
    • = decrease/fall
    • = leads to/results in
    • = not equal to/different
    • = therefore
  • Practice Note-taking:
  • Listen to Short Audio Clips:
    • Use news segments from BBC News or NPR.
  • Apply Abbreviations and Symbols:
    • Try to capture key information efficiently.
  • Tips:
  • Write legibly for quick reference.
  • Use bullet points or numbering for organization.
  • Don’t attempt to write every word—focus on key points.

3. Writing Summaries of Spoken Texts (40 Minutes)

a. Summarizing Practice (20 Minutes)

Instructions:

  1. Select an Audio Recording:
  1. Listen and Take Notes:
  • First Listening: Focus on understanding the overall message.
  • Second Listening: Take detailed notes using your note-taking techniques.
  1. Write a Summary:
  • Time Limit: 10 minutes.
  • Word Count: 50–70 words.
  • Include:
    • Main idea of the talk
    • Key supporting points
    • Any conclusions or implications
  1. Example Summary:
  • “The speaker explains that climate change is accelerating due to increased greenhouse gas emissions and emphasizes the urgent need to shift to renewable energy sources like solar and wind power, which are sustainable and can mitigate environmental impacts.”

b. Reviewing and Editing (10 Minutes)

  • Check for:
  • Word Count: Ensure your summary is within the 50–70 word limit.
  • Grammar and Punctuation: Correct any errors.
  • Clarity and Coherence: Make sure your summary logically presents the information.

c. Grammar Focus: Complex Sentences (10 Minutes)

  • Learn About:
  • Complex Sentences: Sentences that contain one independent clause and at least one dependent clause.
  • Subordinating Conjunctions: Although, because, since, unless, while, whereas, etc.
  • Practice Exercises:
  • Combine Simple Sentences:
    • Example:
    • Simple Sentences:

      • “It helps reduce carbon emissions.”
    • Combined Sentence:
      • “Renewable energy is essential because it helps reduce carbon emissions.”
  • Exercise:
    • Combine the following sentences using appropriate subordinating conjunctions.
    • “Artificial intelligence is advancing rapidly.”
    • “It raises ethical concerns.”
    • Answer:
    • “Although artificial intelligence is advancing rapidly, it raises ethical concerns.”

4. Vocabulary Building (20 Minutes)

a. Word List with Examples

  1. Mitigate (verb)
  • Definition: To make less severe or serious.
  • Sentence: “Renewable energy can mitigate the effects of climate change.”
  1. Urgent (adjective)
  • Definition: Requiring immediate action or attention.
  • Sentence: “There is an urgent need to address environmental issues.”

  • Definition: To put into effect.

  1. Accelerate (verb)
  • Definition: To increase in speed.
